Was a lifestyle and entertainment magazine that, for thirteen years, dealt with a range of topics from the Hamptons to the city.
Covers for the LI Pulse were generally designed to highlight the lead feature or theme from each issue. Through collaboration and input from the publisher and staff, several draft compositions would be submitted for review before a final layout would be sent for a Kodak color proof from the printers and then approved by the publisher.
Has published a quarterly magazine, Report on the Americas, for the past 50 years.
During the last five years I have freelanced with the organization, producing and designing their publication. Working remotely with the Managing Editor, we have been able to discuss layouts and make editorial corrections in an efficient matter.
In the fall of 2014 I managed the redesign of the publication, which updated the overall look and style. This introduced new visual elements and white space that helped improve readability.
The magazine division includes the monthly trade publication Inbound Logistics, which focuses on news within the warehousing, shipping, and technology fields of logistics.
As Creative Director, I oversaw the production and design of each issue along with the conversion of editorial content for digital use.
With the application of advanced automation, tagging, and templates I was able to reduce production time for each issue, which allowed more flexibility to develop creative imagery to convey complex features.
Is a literary magazine that focuses on short stories and poems from up-and-coming writers, as well as interviews with established authors.
Layout for each issue would be discussed remotely between the editorial and production staff, where pagination and supporting artwork was selected.
While at LI Pulse magazine, several of the sections I was responsible for included; Culture, Travel and Auto.
I worked within a defined style guide, which provided the structure needed to explore the range of subject matter in creative layouts.
The February ‘18 issue of LI Pulse featured a 28 page fashion section that included interviews with three business/sports individuals that conveyed what the modern definition of being Dapper means.
As Art Director, and with guidance from the publisher, I oversaw the photo shoots, feature layout and cover design for the special issue.
The Dapper issue also introduced a change in the magazine’s size, from 8”x10.5” to 10”x12”, which involved creating new templates and master pages for the layout of content.
While working at LI Pulse magazine, I could see there was a need for a style guide to be created to help maintain design standards between issues.
After presenting the plan to the publisher, I worked on collecting page elements from FOB, features and BOB. Paragraph styles and master pages templates were created to organize the sections. The culmination being a digital document that could be referenced by the different departments of the magazine and helped reduce production time.
During editorial meetings at LI Pulse magazine, there was flexibility given to select features that were of interest to the Art Directors.
This provided a wonderful range of topics to create layouts with from fashion, architecture, health, and travel.
Through working with photographers/illustrators and PR staff from different companies, I was able to design engaging layouts that helped elevate the style of each issue.
The Appetites section of LI Pulse magazine, was often highlighted by new restaurant openings, interviews with chefs and the latest cocktail creations from master barmen.
Drafting layout concepts ahead of photo shoots gave photographers direction to capture the subjects in a matter that best matched each story.
